Waiting on Wednesday (35)

Fragments (Partials 2) by Dan Wells

26th February 2013

Kira Walker has found the cure for RM, but the battle for the survival of humans and Partials is just beginning. Kira has left East Meadow in a desperate search for clues to who she is. That the Partials themselves hold the cure for RM in their blood cannot be a coincidence–it must be part of a larger plan, a plan that involves Kira, a plan that could save both races. Her companions are Afa Demoux, an unhinged drifter and former employee of ParaGen, and Samm and Heron, the Partials who betrayed her and saved her life, the only ones who know her secret. But can she trust them?

Meanwhile, back on Long Island, what’s left of humanity is gearing up for war with the Partials, and Marcus knows his only hope is to delay them until Kira returns. But Kira’s journey will take her deep into the overgrown wasteland of postapocalyptic America, and Kira and Marcus both will discover that their greatest enemy may be one they didn’t even know existed.

Partials was one of the few dystopians I read last year that I really enjoyed, so I’m really interested to see where this series goes.

Waiting on Wednesday (34)

Since it’s been so long since I did a WoW post, I thought I might combine a few books that I can’t wait to get my hands on next year.

Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers

2nd April 2013

Sybella arrives at the convent’s doorstep half mad with grief and despair. Those that serve Death are only too happy to offer her refuge—but at a price. Naturally skilled in both the arts of death and seduction, the convent views Sybella as one of their most dangerous weapons.

But those assassin’s skills are little comfort when the convent returns her to a life that nearly drove her mad. Her father’s rage and brutality are terrifying, and her brother’s love is equally monstrous. And while Sybella is a weapon of justice wrought by the god of Death himself, He must give her a reason to live. When she discovers an unexpected ally imprisoned in the dungeons, will a daughter of Death find something other than vengeance to live for?

I had some problems with the first book in this series, Grave Mercy, but I’m intrigued enough to want to see where this series goes and to see how LaFevers develops as a writer. I’m hoping Sybella, unlike Ismae, will actually, you know, kill some people, what with being an assassin and all.

I loved Blood Red Road, the first book in this series — I picked it up without knowing anything about it and was completely blown away. Amidst all the YA dystopians that have come out these past couple of years on the back of The Hunger Games (anyone else bored to death of books being compared to this trilogy by the way?), amidst all the hype and build up of these other titles, Blood Red Road wasn’t really on the radar. I certainly didn’t see any other blogs talking about this one until several months after I had picked it up. But Blood Red Road, in my opinion, turned out to be far superior to the rest of then. (Though nothing yet comes close to Patrick Ness, naturally). Check out my review of book one here. I cannot wait to see if Young can do it again and avoid the dreaded middle book syndrome.

I have to say, although the cover is certainly eye-catching and I do actually like the colour — I’m disappointed at the re-design. It’s rather generic. I was hoping they would tie this one in to the illustrated cover of the first book — which is what drew my attention to it in the bookshop in the first place. C’est la vie.
