Book Review: Heir of Storms (Storm Weaver, #1) by Joni McFarland

Happy release day to Heir of Storms! 🎉 As a reader drawn to fantastical realms brimming with elemental powers and imbued with the tension of a good old-fashioned love triangle, I dove into Joni McFarland’s debut with eager anticipation. And while the journey had its ups and downs, I found much to appreciate in this new YA release.

Set in the mystical country of Obstacre, Heir of Storms introduces us to Blaze, a teenage girl whose birth declared her a force of nature—literally. Born as an aquatori, she once commanded storms with ease, but a twist of fate has left her unable to summon anything more than a light drizzle. This kind of "powerless" protagonist is a refreshing twist on the chosen one trope, and it sets the stage for an intriguing journey of self-discovery. Blaze’s character development felt real and relatable; she doesn’t just receive her powers on a silver platter; she learns to navigate failures, confront her past, and discover her potential.

The world-building, however, was a mixed bag for me. The beginning tossed around a whirlwind of fancy terms that left me scratching my head. I struggled a bit until the story settled into a clearer rhythm around the 20% mark. Once the fuss of exposition settled, I appreciated how McFarland didn’t just throw Blaze to the wolves with some obligatory trials. Each trial had meaning, woven seamlessly into the plot rather than feeling like a forced trope.

Of course, I have to touch on the romance. The love triangle was present but non-intrusive—thankfully, it didn’t overshadow the main narrative. While Haldyn, the charming love interest, tugged at my heartstrings with his earnestness, Fox, with his morally grey demeanor, had me rolling my eyes more often than not. Nevertheless, the way Blaze navigated her emotions toward both added to the intrigue without overwhelming the plot.

My reading experience had its peaks and valleys; I found the pacing uneven at times, with some segments dragging a bit too long. However, the ending! Oh my, the suspense had me on the edge of my seat—I can’t remember the last time a cliffhanger left me this excited for a sequel. The quotes do reflect the underlying themes beautifully, especially, “one should not fear the future, one must seize it.” This powerful sentiment resonated deeply with me, blending beautifully with Blaze’s journey.

For fellow fans of found family, elemental powers, and that tantalizing thrill of trials, Heir of Storms makes for a solid read. It combines elements reminiscent of Red Queen, Shadow and Bone, and Throne of Glass, while still offering an original storyline that feels fresh in a genre often mired in tropes.

Overall, I landed at a solid 3.75 stars for this engaging fantasy. Readers seeking a unique power dynamic and character growth will enjoy Blaze’s journey. I look forward to seeing where McFarland takes us next! 💖 Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. Happy reading, everyone!
