No Charm Done: A Spellbinding Sapphic Romance

As a book blogger who thrives on discovering unique tales, I couldn’t resist diving into No Charm Done by Tori Anne Martin. A YA witchy sapphic romance set in a quaint, witch-filled town? Count me in! With stars sparkling in my eyes and a witchy aesthetic sprinkled through my mental images, I opened the cover, eager to unravel the magical story within.

At the heart of No Charm Done are Lily Allerton and Chrysanthemum “Chrys” Quinn—two polar opposites tangled in a fierce rivalry that has endured since Chrys moved to Thornhaven three years ago. Their contentious history is palpable, from silent competitions over grades to battles over boy interests. However, when an unexpected hex gone awry forces them to team up against a looming dark presence, the friction morphs into something unexpected: a delightful enemies-to-lovers arc. This dynamic not only ignites tension but also reveals the complex layers of both characters, making their journey compelling.

Speaking of characters, Chrys is an absolute revelation. She embodies that enchanting blend of relatable intensity and charm—darker yet undeniably warm. As an introvert myself, I found bits of my own quirks in Chrys; her preference for few friends and a penchant for literature resonates deeply. In contrast, while I liked Lily initially, her character seemed to dim a bit as the plot unfolded. Perhaps it was the exploration of her budding feelings for Chrys that caused her to become a secondary player in her own story, though I appreciated her relatable tarot card plotline—until its final twist, which felt a tad forced.

The chemistry between Lily and Chrys is electrifying, with their gradual transition from rivalry to affection painted with palpable tension. As they navigate their feelings and the chaos surrounding them, I couldn’t help but root for them. It’s a journey that feels remarkably authentic, capturing the confusion and excitement of young love, especially as Chrys grapples with rekindling feelings for Lily at the same time Lily is recognizing her own attraction to girls.

Martin’s writing style shines through in its warmth and accessibility. The pacing is largely easy-going, allowing the magical elements to unfurl smoothly while maintaining a touch of urgency around the central conflict. I appreciated the autumnal backdrop of Thornhaven, which felt like a character of its own, wrapping the romance in a cozy, seasonal atmosphere that’s perfect for curling up with a cup of tea.

Yet, as I mentioned, the conclusion threw me for a loop—particularly with the tarot card subplot. Though the storyline tied up loose ends, it felt rushed and didn’t quite align with the rich tapestry woven throughout the narrative. Still, No Charm Done successfully enchants with its majority, filled with delightful moments and characters you can’t help but cheer for.
