Book Review: Catch by (Author’s Name)
Wow, I really enjoyed Catch! In fact, I was so wrapped up in the gripping world the author created that I lost sleep for two nights, haunted by the “catching” element. The concept really took root in my mind, and I couldn’t help but ponder the emotional complexities of the protagonist’s unique abilities. If you’re a fan of YA — especially where a hint of the supernatural meets coming-of-age trials — this book could be your next obsession.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Australia, Catch invites readers into the life of Beth, a 16-year-old navigating the tangled web of high school stressors: overbearing parents, failing grades, basketball practices, a budding romance with the charming Etienne, and, of course, the unique burden of a superpower that doesn’t quite come with a manual. Beth possesses an extraordinary sense that alerts her when someone is about to fall, whether by accident or by choice. This ability manifests in a physically nauseous reaction, compelling her to drop everything and rush to save them. It’s a heart-wrenching notion — the urgency of her power underscores much of the emotional weight of the narrative.
Beth’s inner turmoil and growth are beautifully interwoven with her family dynamics. Her relationship with her sister Meg is particularly poignant; their bond adds depth to the story, showcasing the themes of familial love and support in times of emotional upheaval. And let’s not forget Rock, Beth’s friend whose zest for life and unfiltered honesty brings levity to some of the heavier moments. The friendships depicted here feel authentic, a breath of fresh air amongst the often hyper-edited portrayals of relationships in YA fiction.
The writing style flows seamlessly, with moments of tension interspersed with lyrical prose that evokes the stark beauty of Australia. The pacing felt just right to me, balancing action with introspection — a tricky tightrope to walk, yet one the author manages well.
However, I must admit I had some reservations about the ending. It felt abrupt, leaving me yearning for more clarity about Beth’s journey in the future. Is this a standalone or the beginning of a series? If it’s a series, then I can relax a little. Perhaps a future installment will explore her life—and her fully realized abilities—more deeply. An epilogue would have made my heart sing, giving a glimpse of what a year later looks like for her. But that’s just my two cents!
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend Catch to anyone who enjoys heartfelt YA stories that blend a dash of the extraordinary with relatable life experiences. It captures the essence of growth, love, and the weight of responsibility beautifully. This book left an imprint on me; I found myself reflecting on the metaphorical “falls” we all experience and the ways we support one another through them. So, if you’re in the mood for an emotional ride that lingers long after the last page is turned, Catch just might be the book for you.
A huge thank you to Allen & Unwin for sending me a PR box! 🌟 Happy reading!
