Book Review: Golden by Jade Timms
Wow. Just wow. I can’t stop thinking about Golden! When I first stumbled upon Jade Timms’ fresh release, I was immediately drawn in by that stunning cover—it’s simple yet eye-catching, with colors that just scream summer! A beautiful cover can sometimes be misleading, but in this case, it definitely set the stage for something special. On top of that, the blurb was intriguingly vague, which heightened my excitement even more—something I rarely find myself saying these days!
As an Aussie girl, reading a summer story set in our actual summer months (December to February) felt like a breath of fresh air. I’ve adored summer tales by the likes of Sarah Dessen and Morgan Matson, but this book hit home in a way I didn’t think I needed. It captured the essence of carefree summers perfectly, bringing back memories of beach trips, spontaneous friendships, and the pure thrill of living in the moment. Honestly, after closing the book, I found myself online, looking at bikinis and mentally planning out future holidays—a sure sign that Golden struck a chord!
Eddie, our protagonist, is beautifully drawn, with the world around her depicted so vividly that I honestly felt transported to a beachfront New South Wales town. I was delightfully trapped in nostalgia, recalling those endless summer days. The setting is a character in itself, with descriptions that made me crave the beach. I even fell asleep that night imagining the gentle crash of waves. Timms has an incredible knack for writing that conjures such vivid imagery—I loved every minute of it!
Let’s talk about the music woven throughout the narrative. Seeing a reference to Rage Against the Machine right from the first page? I knew I was in good hands! The playlist of Aussie indie tunes, sprinkled with names like Baker Boy and Taylor Swift, accompanied the characters’ journey and felt like a soundtrack to my own teenage years. What a satisfying nostalgic trip it was!
One of the most poignant aspects of Golden is its exploration of grief, particularly through the symbolism of the mud run. This emotional depth caught me off guard; I found myself teary-eyed as Eddie navigated her loss and growth. Watching her evolve into a more confident version of herself while reconciling with old friendships was such a rewarding experience. Her evolving relationship with Pat flooded me with warmth—by the end, I was rooting for them hard!
I must admit, I’m a sucker for unique names. “Howl” definitely stole the show! Eddie’s name, too, reflects a cute connection to a little girl I babysit, which made me feel even more connected to her. The supporting cast—Stevie, Rads, Viv, Pat, and Blaze—each embodied the vibrant essence of Aussie youth.
I can’t wait to reread Golden! In fact, I just persuaded my friend Eden to grab it for me as a birthday gift, and I’m all set to annotate this gem. I’m even crafting a playlist to accompany it, because why not amplify the experience? If you’re looking for a heartwarming summer read that beautifully captures teenage life, friendship, and the bittersweetness of growing up, look no further than Golden. I truly believe this book might be my highlight of 2025 so far, and I can’t wait to see what Jade Timms conjures up next!
