Book Review: Meet Me on Love Street by L.S. Lakin
As soon as I stumbled upon Meet Me on Love Street, I felt a spark of curiosity. A YA romance set in Toronto? Count me in! After all, I’m always on the lookout for heartwarming tales that capture the essence of growing up, and this gem by L.S. Lakin promises just that. So, let’s dive into my thoughts on this charming coming-of-age story.
First off, I want to give a heartfelt thank you to Simon & Schuster CA for sending me an ARC of this book! It was a delightful experience to immerse myself in Lakin’s world, where love, friendship, and self-discovery intertwine against the vibrant backdrop of Toronto. The story follows Sana, our spirited female main character, as she navigates her teenage years filled with friendship, misunderstandings, and a touch of romance with Miles—a sweet yet somewhat reluctant love interest.
One of the standout aspects of Meet Me on Love Street is its commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Lakin does a wonderful job of weaving a rich tapestry of representation throughout the narrative. It’s refreshing to see characters that reflect a variety of backgrounds, pushing boundaries of what we often encounter in YA literature. As a Canadian, I particularly appreciated the setting—it’s always a joy to read about places near and dear to my heart!
The writing style is engaging, written primarily from Sana’s first-person perspective. It’s easy to follow, making it perfect for the YA audience. This single POV approach allows readers to connect deeply with Sana’s thoughts and emotions while navigating the complexities of her life. I found myself cheering for her, especially in the last third of the book, where the dynamism between Sana and Miles truly shines. Miles—whom I’d describe as an adorable, “grumpy” counterpart—opens up under Sana’s warm spirit and charm. Their growth from enemies to friends (and then something more) feels authentic and rewarding.
That said, I did encounter some pacing issues in the first two-thirds of the book. Initially, the story felt a tad slow and repetitive. There were moments where the misunderstandings almost pulled me away, and I wished for a bit more banter between the leads to keep the momentum flowing. However, the genuine moments and the character development ultimately won me over, so I pressed on.
On an aesthetic level, there was a sweet, soft spice to the story—a nice backdrop of romance without overwhelming the main plot. “Spice” rating of 0.5 may indicate a lack of heated scenes, but there’s an undeniable sweetness in the innocence of their budding relationship.
Overall, Meet Me on Love Street is a decent read. I’d recommend it to younger readers and anyone looking for a diverse, inclusive, and heartfelt story. It resonates with the joys and challenges of being a teenager, and it captures the beauty of young love amidst life’s many hurdles. While it may not break new ground in the romance genre, it has a certain charm that’s hard to resist.
