Book Review: The Lies of Vampires and Slayers (Magic on Main Street) by Kitty Bennett

When I first laid eyes on The Lies of Vampires and Slayers, it felt like a dazzling promise—a continuation of the magic-filled worlds Kitty Bennett has created. Having experienced her knack for crafting cliffhangers in her previous Magiford series, my family and I decided to wait until the entire trilogy was available before diving in. And boy, was it worth the wait!

From the moment I met Jade, I was captivated. Jade is a refreshing breath of air—her social anxiety resonates on a level many of us know too well. The way she navigates conversations, often filled with self-deprecating humor and nervous thoughts, is an eye-opener. It’s a beautiful, albeit challenging, journey of self-discovery, and I found myself rooting for her every step of the way. Jade’s role as a supernatural “cop” adds an engaging twist to the narrative, but I couldn’t help but agree with her friends: girl, please practice some self-preservation! Her determination imparts such a relatable quality to her character, making her journey feel authentic and compelling.

Now, let’s talk about Considine. Wow. What a character! He’s the first male lead in the Magiford universe that I can say I genuinely disliked, at least for most of the book. His jerk tendencies created a tension that had me clenching my jaw at times. Yet, I won’t deny he has the potential for growth, and I’m curious to see how Kitty will twist this character arc. The chemistry between him and Jade is still a puzzle that I’m eager to see unfold, though as of now, it feels like an uphill battle.

The pacing felt a touch more relaxed compared to previous books. Unlike the overarching Organization plotline that kept my heart racing, this installment leans into a supernatural crime narrative sprinkled with delightful humor and charming camaraderie. The delightful ensemble cast of characters brings the story alive, and seeing all the Drakes reappear sparked pure fangirl joy!

One thing that struck me was Kitty’s effortless ability to weave humor and tension. The narrative might occasionally dip into darker themes—think magical corruption and danger—but it’s balanced with wit that had me chuckling even in suspenseful moments. The playful banter among the characters is refreshing, making the reading experience feel like a cozy gathering of friends.

In terms of content, I appreciate Kitty’s careful approach to the supernatural elements. There’s enough fantasy to satisfy the cravings of genre fans, just enough violence to keep the stakes high, and a sprinkling of cautionary moments around the complexities of magical life. Readers should be aware of a few darker moments interspersed throughout, but nothing feels gratuitous.

For anyone who finds themselves drawn into fantastical worlds laced with humor, heart, and a sprinkle of social commentary, The Lies of Vampires and Slayers is a delightful read. Its playful yet insightful exploration of themes like friendship and self-acceptance will resonate with many, especially those familiar with the challenges of connecting in a bustling social landscape.

As I finished the last chapter, my heart was full, and I was eagerly planning when to dive into the next installment. If you’re searching for a light yet impactful twist on the supernatural genre, this book may just be your next favorite escapade! Happy reading, everyone!
