Review: The Lost Heirs (Arcana, #1) by Sam Prentice-Jones
When I first laid eyes on The Lost Heirs, the vibrant cover and tantalizing concept of a magical society drew me in—who wouldn’t want to dive into a world filled with witches, curses, and deep-rooted conspiracies? Thanks to Toppling Stacks Tours & Sam Prentice-Jones for sending me a copy, I was able to explore this enchanting graphic novel that promises to be the first of many in the Arcana series.
At a hefty 371 pages, The Lost Heirs beautifully manages to balance depth with pacing—allowing for each character to unfold organically without feeling rushed. The narrative follows Eli, a lone witch who finds themselves immersed in the mysterious world of the Arcana—a collective of witches investigating supernatural occurrences. As Eli’s journey progresses, they encounter friendships (and a cute budding romance with James), as they delve deeper into the mysteries surrounding a curse and shadow beings.
One of the standout elements of this book is definitely the artistry. The monochromatic palette, punctuated by earthy yellow and warm rust tones, elevates the atmosphere of the story beautifully. The introduction of vibrant reds for fire elements really pops, giving life to the emotional moments. What resonated with me the most was the diverse representation of bodies and identities in the characters—seeing Eli and Koko as plus-sized witches felt empowering and refreshing, particularly in a genre that often neglects body diversity.
The opening chapters, where each of the five main characters starts their day, were a brilliant choice by Prentice-Jones. It lays the foundation for us to connect with them individually. I loved getting to know Eli’s determination to uncover family secrets, James’s charismatic friendliness, Daphne’s overall competence, how sociable and stylish Koko is, and Sonny’s delightful nerdiness. This rich character development makes their dynamic as a group even more engaging; their interactions feel real and relatable—like a quirky, found-family vibe that you can’t help but root for.
As for the writing style, Prentice-Jones has a knack for pacing that enhances the emotional tone without dragging it down. The cliffhanger at the end left me both exhilarated and desperate for more! The Lost Heirs isn’t just about magic; it weaves in friendships, personal struggles, and even subtle threads of romantic tension—yes, I’m talking about the sweet flirtation between Eli and James, which had me grinning from ear to ear.
In a world where diverse stories are becoming increasingly necessary, The Lost Heirs not only entertains but also embraces a beautiful spectrum of identities. With representation that includes a gay MC who uses he/they pronouns and a transfemme character, it feels significant for readers craving inclusivity in graphic novels.
If you enjoy longer-form graphic novels that captivate your imagination and present a rich tapestry of diverse characters and heartfelt connections, I wholeheartedly recommend The Lost Heirs. The personal representation struck a chord with me, and the thrill of uncovering mysteries alongside these vibrant characters kept me engaged from start to finish. I can’t wait to see where Prentice-Jones takes us next in this spellbinding journey!
