When Devils Sing: A Gripping Southern Gothic Tale
Wow! From the moment I cracked open When Devils Sing by Xan Kur, I was absolutely entranced. There’s something about Southern tales, with their intricate webs of town secrets, power dynamics, and a tantalizingly eerie tension between poverty and wealth, that calls to me. Add to that the haunting chorus of cicadas and a trio of devilish brothers tempting beleaguered townsfolk with dangerous deals, and I’m instantly hooked. This book envelops you in supernatural intrigue and a rich Southern Gothic atmosphere, exploring the intertwined fates of four outcast teens from broken homes.
The story kicks off with a chilling prologue that’s part of a podcast—a clever narrative device that sets the tone for a tale steeped in mystery. We are introduced to the stark divide between Lakeside, a bastion of affluence, and the tragedy-ridden Carrion, where death and disappearances haunt the residents. Here, we meet Sam, facing unimaginable trials as she battles to save her brother after a hit-and-run. Encountering Jack, a mysterious figure with the power to revive the dead, Sam’s life spirals into a dangerous underworld filled with debts to be collected.
Neera, another standout character, is fiercely determined to change her family’s fortunes while navigating the treacherous waters of loyalty and truth. Her dreams of winning the Cicada’s Song contest resonate deeply, especially as she grapples with the dark secrets that threaten her family. I found myself not only rooting for Neera but wishing I could arm her with the strength she needs to confront the baddies threatening her loved ones.
The cast is rounded out by Isaiah, a budding podcaster digging into the community’s buried secrets, and Reid, who finds himself questioning the dark legacy of his family. The interplay between these characters as they confront their demons delivers both tension and emotional depth.
Xan Kur’s pacing in When Devils Sing is impeccable; I often felt as if I were holding my breath, eager to uncover more secrets with every turn of the page. The writing style is rich and atmospheric, transporting readers to a world where the cicadas’ song becomes herald to madness and deceit. The way Kur weaves folklore and contemporary themes creates a textured narrative that stays with you long after you’ve closed the book.
As a fan of Southern horror, particularly those penned by Grady Hendrix, I was pleasantly surprised by how When Devils Sing surpassed even my highest expectations. It conjures serious vibes reminiscent of Ryan Coogler’s Sinner, my favorite film of the year. Every character felt fleshed out, their development seamless, and the plot twists shot straight through me like lightning.
This book is a must-read for fans of horror, folklore, and compelling character-driven narratives. If you have an affinity for chilling tales where the familiar becomes the uncanny, then add this gem to your TBR immediately. You’ll find yourself breathlessly turning pages, spellbound by a world that feels achingly real yet thrillingly supernatural.
Xan Kur has officially earned a place on my auto-approved author list, and I can’t wait to delve into more of their work. Huge thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group for providing me with a digital copy of this masterpiece. I wholeheartedly recommend When Devils Sing—it’s a haunting adventure that’ll captivate you from start to finish.
