ElizÂaÂbeth Wein, author of Code Name Verity, very genÂerÂously agreed to give us a guest post about flygirls!
FlyÂgirls
One of the things that I set out very conÂsciously to do in writÂing Code Name VerÂity was to give my heroÂines imporÂtant work that they were capaÂble of doing. I feel that we all need a nudgÂing reminder that many women still don’t get taken seriÂously in jobs that are traÂdiÂtionÂally assoÂciÂated with men, and that we need to conÂtinÂuÂally expand our horizons.
I get so mad when peoÂple assume that you can’t be interÂested in flyÂing just because you’re a girl. At my first flyÂing club ChristÂmas party, after I’d started takÂing lessons, when I introÂduced myself to another woman at the party the first thing she asked was, ‘And whose wife are you?’ —As though I couldn’t posÂsiÂbly be there on my own. The freeÂdom of the sky, and the sense of accomÂplishÂment in knowÂing how to land a plane myself, are the most hard-won prizes I have ever earned. They shouldn’t be denied to anybody.
AmazÂingly, because it seems to be a coinÂciÂdence that 8 March is InterÂnaÂtional Women’s Day and that the first ‘national’ Women’s Day was celÂeÂbrated in 1910, 8 March 1910 hapÂpens to be the day that RayÂmonde de Laroche of France became the world’s first female licensed pilot.
